Officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the country lies in the southern Levant region of West Asia. It’s just a few hours by plane from major European capitals, and you can be in Jordan – bordered by Saudi Arabia, Syria, Palestine, Israel and Iraq. With a short escape to the Red Sea in Aqaba and the lowest point on Earth – the Dead Sea. It is impossible not to fall in love with Jordan! I find it more European than any other Middle Eastern country. Maybe because it is a Biblical land, a mix of cultures, traditions and history. Jordan offers an incredible landscape and UNESCO World heritage as a must to discover for everyone.
This photo journey introduces you to various places in Jordan. Amman – the capital of Jordan, built on seven hills. It is the city where modern meets the ancient Philadelphia (ancient Rabbath-Ammon), one of the Greco-Roman decapolis (ten-cities in Greek) cities federation. Buried for centuries and uncovered over the past 70 years, Jerash (Gerasa) showcases a prime example of Roman provincial urbanism, with paved streets, grand temples, theaters, public squares, baths, fountains, and fortified walls. Wait for the afternoon when the sun makes sandstone soft in colors and forms and shadows start to play its own story. Ajloun Castle (Qal‘at Ar-Rabad), a 12th-century fortress built by Sultan Saladin.
Petra - probably the most famous place in Jordan. Definitely, it is for more than a one-day exploration, where you can take many photos and enjoy other discoveries. Passing though the winding gorge known as the Siq, you will slowly open a view of Al Khazna, or the Treasury - probably the most well known Petra representing view in the world. Carved from rosy-hued sandstone, it is slowly opening with all its majestic beauty by meeting everyone who has ever entered historical Petra. It offers more than 600 stone facades and an intriguing list of clues about its past residents, natural caves and the fascinating colors of the sandstone. Madaba, Mount Nebo, the Baptism site – all these Biblical places that will offer you great pleasure in discovering the architecture and landscapes' wonders. Wadi Rum – for me, like Petra – is a place where you can stay for more than one day and observe nature, how shadows from clouds are changing the whole view of over one billion years, counting sandstone rocks and the chains of mountains that witnessed the Nabateans and today's beduin life. The "red desert" boasts unique formations like gorges, archways, and honeycomb cliffs. Be curious to discover the petroglyphs and take photos of the desert ships - camels. Enjoyable sunsets over the mountains that are on the other side of the Red Sea every evening you can enjoy in Aqaba. Nature itself will guide you through the places where you can take different photos each time. Definitely, Jordan is a place to come back.
